At the university I attend, I had the honor of attending a lecture given by Tony Campolo on world hunger. Standing up he looked at us and shook his head in disgust.
"You kids today don't give a shit about anyone but yourselves!"
The room got deadly silent and students sat stunned. Did a public speaker just really say that?! Could he say that?! He continued;
"Most of you only care that I just sad a bad word, not that thousands will die today!"
Looking around at my peers, I could sense their guilt as they shifted in their seat uncomfortably. Maybe that was my own guilt...When did something as trivial as a socially unacceptable worked become the center and main focus of "correction"? Why not laugh off the bad word and focus our energies on helping those who really need it?
Just like a kaleidoscope, things have become distorted. We ignore the mountain so that we can play with rocks at the base.
We all choose who we want to be. Who we become depends on our priorities. I don't know about you guys, but living for myself is getting old. In my heart I know its time to twist this kaleidoscope.
This is a really good post! REally has me thinkin' on some things...
